HUARAZ - Trek Santa Cruz

HUARAZ - Photo Story of the Trek Santa Cruz.

After a few days in Lima, the Peruvian capital I'll talk about later (because we'll be back there in a couple of days) JB and I took another horrible night bus woth Flavia a Swiss friend we met in Lima, to get to Huaraz, the Chamonix of the Andes, a bit further north in the Cordillera Blanca. The Cordillera Blanca is probably the nicest part of the Andes with around 50 peaks over 5000m, most of them caped with snow, some huge glaciers and clear lagunas. It´s a wonderfull place where you can do treks from avery little pueblo, where you can ski on glaciers, where you can climb rocks or ice, etc.

We thus went last monday to walk a little bit in those mountains, with Flavia our new swiss friend. We did the  Trek Santa Cruz, 4 days of hike which we decided to do without a guide but hoping to go with a local arriero (donkey-man) and his donkey. We didn't want to ruin our backs carrying tents, sleeping bags, food, water... When we arrived at the beginning of the trek, we found our donkey and left around 11am last monday, but around midday, the donkey left us... Indeed there was a part of the trail where a landslide had occured last week, and it was too dangerous for the donkey to keep going, but not for us... We thus decided to change roles, the donkey went back home and I found myself with 15 kilos on my back for 4 days. And so was JB... And to make it better, that´s when the rain started!

It wasn't probably the best way to start this Trek, but it was only to frighten us, because from this point, apart from a bit of rain from time to time, everything went great! More than great, memorable! The landscapes where amazing with huge snowy mountains, blue-green lagunas, camp site along roaring rios, colorfull flowers from the mountains... I have to admit that this trek is one of my favourite memories of this trip around South America!

And since this post is called Photo Story of the Trek Santa Cruz, I'll thank Flavia for her pics because JB's camera is being repaired in Lima since last episode in the Sand of Huacachina (A post which will be in English soon, I promise!).
